“Vidarbha Widows Forced Into Prostitution” – isn’t true
“Vidarbha Widows Forced Into Prostitution” – isn’t true (Distress of a Citizen Journalist on the news item – Witness broadcast on NDTV exclusively expressed through our website . Here is what our citizen journalist has to say on it) Thousands of people concerned with on – going crises in Vidharbha were shocked to see the programme – Witness (Broadcast on NDTV) and could not sleep through out night. There are many social groups who are selflessly concerned with issues related to farmers (and their widows) at Vidarbha committed to uplift the condition of such deprived and ill-feted ones. A program broadcast on NDTV has caused all a deep pain. It suggests that the widows of the farmers (who have committed suicides) are compelled to enter into prostitution. It is quiet disheartening for more than 3500 farm widows who are working hard against all odds to lead a good life. I being a member of a social group (VJAS - Vidarbha Jan Aandolan Samiti) have closely observed that they toil real hard to earn a living for their families. Their moral support and strong will to survive is what keeps the welfare work at Vidarbha moving. The spirit and courage reflected by these widows in order to live a blameless and morally correct life is commendable. But the program aired through NDTV, poses a question mark on to the character of all farm widows .Moreover, projecting Vidarbha as an emerging hub for prostitution is not what may be called a fair reporting. It must be the responsibility of NDTV to further probe on this news item as it seems to be fabricated. Instead of sensationalizing this grave issue, the time is to accolade the farm widows as every day in Vidarbha comes with a new story of farmers’ suicide or their painful trauma for survival. May God bless Vidarbha farmers and their widows
